For transportation, options included the clanging green-painted trains, the bumpy long-distance buses, the roaring tractors, or the noisy gasoline-powered boats and the creaking rowboats. In some cases, people even traveled on foot. When I was a child, I lived with my parents in Yuyao, Ningbo, while my grandparents lived in the countryside of Shaoxing, Shangyu. During the Spring Festival and during school vacations, I would eagerly look forward to going to my grandparents' house, but it required my parents to have free time to make the trip possible. The night before our departure, we would be so excited that we couldn't sleep, dreaming about missing our scheduled transportation and then waking up to continue sleeping until morning. My mother would shake me awake and say, "If you don't get up soon, you'll miss the bus!" We would suddenly wake up, full of joy and excitement, shouting and making noise.

The green-painted train clanged to a stop at the Wufu Station in Yu, and the next stop would see a rowboat waiting on the shore. The rhythmic sound of the oars carried us towards our grandmother's home. The water rippled gently, and the scenery on both banks gradually faded into the distance. From a distance, we could see our grandmother sitting quietly under an old cypress tree, waiting for us. When the boat reached the shore, she quickly approached, and we rushed into her arms. She tightly embraced us, calling us "dearest ones." As we prepared to leave, she continued to wave from under the tree, her figure growing more poignant against the backdrop of twilight. At that time, information about our journey was communicated orally, and our grandmother often waited for what seemed like an hour or even half a day. Despite the inconvenience, she was filled with joy. From that moment on, a deep connection was formed between me and the water towns, ancient bridges, and the rowboats.

The years have flowed like water, passing through the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter over a span of more than half a century. From a naive child to a young and inexperienced individual, and then to a gentle young woman and a composed middle-aged person, I have experienced various stages of life. In the autumn of 2020, when I first set foot in Wuzhen, tears unexpectedly welled up in my eyes. Childhood memories flooded back like a tide: the water town, ancient bridges, rowing boats, the figure of my grandmother, the simplicity of blue floral fabric. A sense of familiarity and warmth spread through my heart – as if I had walked through the narrow alleys shrouded in morning mist and had leaned against the stone railing by the riverbank. The moment was captured by the camera, and thoughts flowed freely in my mind. The concept for the "Like Water Years" series of beautiful posts began to take shape quietly.

The beauty of Wuzhen is immersed in the flowing waters that have existed for thousands of years. A river has flowed through the town since ancient times, connecting the northern and southern parts of the town. Tributaries of the canal flow into the town from the northwest corner, sometimes forming rivers, then turning into harbors, and finally becoming lakes. These twists and turns create a complex network of waterways, intricately woven into the fabric of the town. Wuzhen was born from the water, with streets built along the water's edge and commerce flourishing by its side. Houses are built along the riverbanks, with residents enjoying the view of the blue waters from their windows; households collect water from their morning windows, with morning mist reflecting on the waves. Bridges lie across the water, connecting moments of casual conversation; boats navigate through the waves, carrying people back and forth throughout the day and night. The waterfront promenade is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where people can sit or lie down, sharing stories about daily life and expressing their feelings. The gentle flow of the water mirrors the passage of time, a constant companion through the years.

The beauty of Wuzhen lies in the clear and soothing waters. The river in Xiazhai, with a width of no more than twenty meters, is surrounded by villages where the sounds of chickens and dogs can be heard, and the sights of daily life are inviting. Wooden chairs are placed at the foot of the walls, and stone steps meander towards the water, where boats with oars wait for passengers. Sitting alone in a flat-roofed boat with oars, one can reflect or simply let the mind wander. The gentle waves caress the heart, bringing a sense of tranquility. Wuzhen is the perfect place to lose oneself in thought. After allowing one's thoughts to settle, it feels as though the person has become a painting on the wall, a scene by the shore, and a shadow in the water, all of which blend seamlessly with the water-rich environment. This region is akin to a warm and smooth piece of jade from the south of the Yangtze River. After enduring the test of time and benefiting from the nourishment provided by the flowing water, it has developed an increasingly rich and profound charm.

The beauty of Wuzhen lies in the intricate interplay of bridges. There are no two identical bridges or leaves in the world; Wuzhen has no two identical bridges either. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, over 80 bridges have been constructed in a way that creates a harmonious landscape, making it akin to a "Museum of Ancient Water Bridges." Bridges with single openings, those with three openings, and stone arch bridges, each with its own unique character. Some are solemn and imposing, with moss creeping into the crevices, carrying the weight of time. Others are graceful and ethereal, with simple yet elegant lines, reminiscent of the free-hand brushwork in Chinese painting. Some are unassuming and plain, quietly lying across the river, much like an old farmer's handkerchief draped lightly over the river's edge. Above these stone bridges, there might be ancient pavilions, intricate carvings, or couplets inscribed on the bridges, each element revealing the gentle charm and refined elegance characteristic of the water-laced landscape.

The bridges in Wuzhen are like long scrolls hanging over the water. The stone arches embrace the mist over the river, embedding both separations and anticipated reunions within the crevices of the bridge. Some people have leaned on the railing, gazing intently at the water's surface. The tender gaze of a mother is intertwined with the sound of the oar. The silhouettes of ships leaving and returning, as well as the tips of oars, all blend into the vast expanse of the sky and water, leaving behind moss-covered marks on the bridge's railings. For the people of Wuzhen, bridges are not merely the endpoints of paths. They serve as stages where the joys and sorrows of countless years unfold; they act as anchors for homesickness, connecting the imagined river wharfs and wooden windows; and they are also the crossing points of the heart – from the railings, one can gaze out at the river, sending a lifetime's thoughts to the flowing water and returning boats.

The water market in the West Village section of Wuzhen is divided into two distinct areas by a wooden causeway—the causeway stretches across the West River. Grabbing a handful of these snacks fills the mouth with the unique flavor of the water town. The boats on the river: their deck planks are covered with bamboo screens. The oranges, the tender white radishes, and the deep purple sweet potatoes and yams contrast with the deep brown color of the wooden boats, creating a scene that is akin to moving fields into the center of the river. As the early light just began to soften the tiles at the eaves, long poles pierced through the misty river air, and the sound of the oars mixed with the moisture to converge at the waterfront. The wooden panels of the water pavilion were "creaking" as they were removed, and the copper stove in the teahouse started to heat up first. The steam from the tofu stall mingled with the fragrance of the tofu, spreading into the alleys. Next came the aroma of fried buns, followed by the warm fragrance of roasted chestnuts. The morning scent of the town—pan-fried dumplings with crispy edges, wontons floating in a broth, with a sprinkle of green onions adding a fresh, dew-like quality to each bowl. The boat's oars creaked as they cut through the waves, causing the mountains of Qiannan to appear as a hazy green. The faint fragrance of plants and herbs wafted through the air, making one feel as though even their breathing was lightened. The distant Wind and Rain Bridge lay shrouded in mist, the overhanging eaves of the hanging-foot houses reaching towards the sky. In the alleyway, the pot of sour fish soup is bubbling, and the spicy aroma escaping through the wooden windows mingles with the autumn sunlight. Even the creaking sound of the hanging-foot structure as the wind passes through seems to be imbued with the softness of rice wine.

The riverbed of Wujiang Zha meanders gracefully, with the water flowing in a soothing rhythm that follows the contours of the mountains. The green hills on both banks create a picturesque scene, with the wooden outlines of the hanging-foot-style buildings and the elegantly curved eaves all submerged in the water. Unlike the narrow and intricate waterways found in the Jiangnan region, this area boasts a more expansive and rugged landscape. Standing on the stone steps, one can reflect deeply, marveling at the extraordinary craftsmanship of nature while appreciating the ingenious design of the Wuzhen team: without any deliberate embellishments, the scene unfolds organically in harmony with the natural characteristics of the mountains and water. This approach not only preserves the authentic essence of the natural surroundings but also conveys the poetic and gentle spirit of the Wuzhen team.

The green waters and lush mountains support the cultural heritage, protecting and preserving it while empowering innovation. The team in Wuzhen has deeply explored the integration of culture and tourism based on this philosophical approach, resulting in products that have gained popularity both domestically and internationally, particularly among the younger generation. This achievement has made Wuzhen a leading example in terms of revenue, operation, management, and positive reviews for ancient towns across the country. This success is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and genuine passion of the entire team. The team's core leader, Chairman Chen Xianghong, exemplifies this approach: he not only envisions a grand blueprint with a long-term perspective but also personally engages in refining the architectural details. For him, only a "backup of time" can truly embody the highest aspirations for Wuzhen.

The sound of the oars in Wuzhen is soft, causing the delicate reflections of water lilies beneath the stone bridges to shatter; the sound of the oars in Wujiang Zha is soothing, spreading the gentle ripples along the edges of the hanging pavilions. These boats, all part of the same lineage, carry the meticulous craftsmanship and poetic essence of Wuzhen, stirring the memories of visitors and activating the threads of time. The eaves of Wuzhen are adorned with the rain of the Jiangnan region, while the stone paths in Wujiang Zha reflect the clouds of the Qian region. Yet, both are transformed into a sense of spring within the hearts of those who hear the soothing sound of the oars. It turns out that whether it's the narrow alleys of the Jiangnan region or the secluded villages in the mountains, whether it's the gentle charm of the northern Zhejiang region or the ethereal beauty of the southern Qian region, due to the meticulous craftsmanship, the tender melodies accompanied by the sound of the oars have always been a unifying force that bridges the past and the present, transcending geographical boundaries.

Editor: Ni Jie’er.
